The Islamic Society of Markham had the privilege and honour to host the 1st annual Canadian Muslim Council of Ontario Conference at Jam’e Masjid Markham on Friday February 19, 2010. Ten Masajids, representing at least 200 representatives and congregants, from the GTA and the surrounding areas of Pickering and Newmarket accepted the invitation and participated in the evening’s program.

The purpose of the program was to help organize and unite the efforts of many local Masajid to lead the GTA/905 Muslim community with one voice.

The conference was opened with a beautiful recital of Qur’anic verses followed by a warm welcome and opening remarks form the Director and Treasurer of ISM, Br. Ehsanullah Ehsan.

Dinner was provided through the generosity of members of the ISM board of Directors who donated supplies, and the dedication of volunteers of the Events & Kitchen Committee who arranged and prepared all of the dishes on the Masjid premises.

Keynote speeches were delivered on the topics of the importance of the role of youth and sisters in Islam, the need for involvement in the political process at all levels of government, the exchange of speakers and imams for Friday Khutba and Jumah prayers and topics on current affairs and issues and the benefits of unity among Muslims and Mosques.

As part of the conference, and update was provided on an initiative to acquire land for a Muslim Cemetery for GTA and 905 area Muslims. The subject of an Islamic school with secular studies which meets the Ontario Ministry of Education standards which was addressed by Br. Yahya Quershi, a well respected authority.

By the grace of Allah SWT this effort which has now been started will serve as a means to unite the Muslim Ummah in our actions, our contributions, and our voice. Alhumdullilah, with the topics tabled, we were able to achieve the first step in this uniquely monumental task.

The program was concluded with closing remarks and a message to carry this torch of noble message forward among the global Ummah by Br. Mansoor Aziz, a director of Islamic Society of Markham.
